No standardized processes exist for evaluating and managing acute urinary retention in hospitalized patients. To address this gap, researchers recruited a multidisciplinary expert panel of 11 nurses and physicians who were experienced at managing urinary retention in medical and postoperative patients to construct an algorithm. Panelists were asked to evaluate ≈100 clinical scenarios, and a flow sheet was formulated based on their responses. After additional feedback was provided by other experts, interviews were conducted with 33 frontline clinicians from various specialties to refine the algorithm further.
