Guidelines encourage clinicians to initiate medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD) in hospitalized patients, but treatment remains inadequate (NEJM JW Gen Med Jul 1 2024 and JAMA Intern Med 2024; 184:691). In this study, conducted at six New York City hospitals, researchers examined whether addiction-consult teams (comprising a clinician, social worker or counselor, and peer counselor) are an effective approach to improving addiction treatment and increasing use of MOUD. Researchers compared these outcomes before and after implementation of the consult teams.
