HIV preexposure prophylaxis (PrEP) remains underutilized, but understanding the factors underlying higher adherence can guide improvement. Investigators matched pharmacy claims for new insurer-approved PrEP prescriptions from 2015–2019 with national provider data representing up to 85% of all U.S. PrEP prescriptions. Clinicians' specialties were categorized into primary care (PC), infectious disease (ID), and other advanced practice (AP; e.g., OB/GYN, emergency medicine). Rates of reversal (initial prescriptions filled but not picked up) and abandonment (reversed prescriptions not picked up for 1 year) were assessed across specialties.
