Approximately 5% of pregnancies are complicated by iron-deficiency anemia, and screening for anemia during pregnancy is common. In 2015, The USPSTF concluded that evidence was not sufficient to recommend either for or against screening for iron-deficiency anemia or routine iron supplementation in asymptomatic pregnant adolescents or adults (I statements; Ann Intern Med 2015; 163:529). Now, the USPSTF has updated its literature review and revisited this issue.
The Task Force found adequate evidence showing that supplemental iron in pregnancy carries minimal risk and improves maternal hematological indices.
