The American College of Cardiology (ACC) and American Heart Association (AHA) have for many years published evidence-based quality metrics of processes, structures, and outcomes for cardiovascular conditions. Now, an ACC/AHA joint task force has updated its set of measures for the care of heart failure (HF). This update includes new performance measures (PMs; measures of adequate rigor and importance to be considered for accountability purposes such as pay-for-performance) and quality measures (QMs; metrics not meeting criteria of performance measures but intended for quality-improvement efforts). Notably, none of the previously established metrics for HF care were retired.
