Long-Term Outcomes After Endovascular Thrombectomy of LVO and Large Established Infarct

Endovascular thrombectomy of large-vessel occlusion was associated with improvements in functional outcomes, self-reported physical health, and survival at 12 months.

The RESCUE-Japan LIMIT, ANGEL-ASPECT, SELECT2, and TENSION trials provide evidence to support expanding the indications for endovascular thrombectomy to include acute ischemic stroke patients with large established infarcts at presentation — patients excluded from the pivotal endovascular thrombectomy trials. As is typical for trials in acute stroke, efficacy and safety were assessed at 90 days and showed clear improvements in outcomes with endovascular thrombectomy. However, given the severity of these strokes, poor outcomes were still common, even with treatment. Now the TENSION investigators present extended 12-month outcomes from this trial.
