Type 2 diabetes appears to increase the risk for dementia by as much as 60%, and observational studies suggest that some antidiabetic drugs help to protect against dementia. In particular, sodium–glucose cotransporter-2 (SGLT-2) inhibitors might preserve cognitive function better than dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitors, which seem to have no neuroprotective capacity. In this latest study, researchers used national databases in Korea to identify 110,000 people (age range, 40–69; mean, 62) with type 2 diabetes and no history of dementia who started using SGLT-2 inhibitors between 2013 and 2021 and propensity-matched them to an equal number of people who started using DPP-4 inhibitors during the same interval.
