Multiple proprietary fecal immunochemical tests (FITs) are available in the U.S., but comparative data regarding test characteristics are lacking. Researchers conducted a prospective cross-sectional study to explore the performance of five commonly used FITs in middle-aged and older patients (age range, 50–85) who were scheduled for screening or surveillance colonoscopy.
About 3800 patients completed the five FITs, using the same stool sample, several days before undergoing colonoscopy. Four FITs were qualitative tests, and one was quantitative (reported as positive when hemoglobin was >100 ng/mL). The findings are as follows:
