Immunosuppressed individuals mount diminished responses to vaccination against COVID-19, so alternative strategies are needed to protect these susceptible patients. Hybrid immunity is conferred by vaccination and infection with SARS-CoV-2; however, little is known about the degree of protection conferred by this form of immunity among immunocompromised persons. Now, investigators in Spain report incidence and severity of COVID-19 in vaccinated kidney transplant recipients with or without hybrid immunity.
In all, 1114 kidney transplant recipients who received 4 doses of mRNA SARS-CoV-2 vaccine were followed. Among 672 without a history of SARS-CoV-2 infection, 36% contracted COVID-19, 6% were hospitalized, and 1% died. Among 442 participants …
