Despite the severity of illness caused by respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) in infants and young children, supportive care is the mainstay of treatment. Preventive strategies include the monoclonal antibody nirsevimab for infants and RSV vaccine for older adults and pregnant women. Now, in a phase 3 multicenter trial in China, investigators further tested the safety and efficacy of a new antiviral, ziresovir, an orally administered F protein fusion inhibitor.
Following a safety and pharmacokinetic analysis, 256 children (age range, 1–24 months) hospitalized with RSV were randomized to ziresovir (171) or placebo (85).
