For most patients with atrial fibrillation (AF), treatment with oral anticoagulation (OAC) is recommended for long-term stroke prevention. Despite OAC treatment, some patients will experience breakthrough embolic events. These patients are at high risk for further recurrent events, and improved treatment options are welcome. In this study, authors conducted a propensity-method analysis in which patients with AF who underwent left atrial appendage (LAA) occlusion after having an ischemic stroke or other thromboembolic event while receiving OAC treatment were matched with patients who continued with OAC therapy after a thromboembolic event.
