Since July of 2012 — when preexposure prophylaxis (PrEP) medication for preventing HIV infection (branded TDF/FTC) was first approved by the FDA — branded TAF/FTC, generic TDF/FTC, and injectable cabotegravir (CAB-LA) have also been approved. Now, CDC investigators have analyzed PrEP prescriptions using a national database that enables single-patient tracking of prescriptions and demographic data.
From 2013 through 2023, a total of 1,126,878 persons (89% male) received PrEP prescriptions, with the annual number of PrEP users increasing from 10,281 to 505,730.
