The World Health Organization recommendation of a single dose of typhoid conjugate vaccine (TCV) for children in high-burden countries is based on clinical trials in which participants were followed for 2 years. To assess durability of protection, investigators conducted additional follow-up of 44,000 children in Bangladesh who were initially assigned (at age 9 months–15 years) to receive either TCV or Japanese encephalitis vaccine. Participants who received Japanese encephalitis vaccine were given TCV at their final visit. In this study, follow-up was extended to 5 years and vaccine effectiveness was assessed in children recently immunized with TCV (i.e., at the last study visit) compared with those vaccinated in the original trial.
