In June 2023, the protein-based respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) vaccines Abrysvo and Arexvy were recommended in the U.S. to persons aged ≥60 years; however, trials supporting licensure were not powered for the clinically relevant endpoints of RSV-related hospitalization and emergency department (ED) visits. In an electronic medical records–based study encompassing nine healthcare systems in eight states, investigators used a test-negative design to assess the effectiveness of RSV vaccines against RSV-related hospitalization and ED visits in persons aged ≥60 from October 2023 through March 2024 (the first RSV season after vaccine approval).
