Atorvastatin and rosuvastatin often are considered to be interchangeable. In a recent randomized trial from South Korea, patients who took either medication had similar cardiovascular outcomes, but incidence of diabetes was higher among rosuvastatin recipients (NEJM JW Gen Med Nov 15 2023 and BMJ 2023; 383:e075837). It's not clear whether these results are generalizable to non-Korean populations.
To compare these medications further, researchers reviewed two large databases from China and the U.K. Approximately 134,000 patients in the Chinese database and 6000 in the U.K. database initiated atorvastatin or rosuvastatin and were propensity-score matched within their cohort.
