Vonoprazan (Voquezna) is a potassium-competitive acid blocker that inhibits gastric acid secretion. In November 2023, the U.S. FDA approved use of vonoprazan for treating patients with erosive esophagitis (NEJM JW Gen Med Jun 15 2024).
More recently (July 2024), the FDA approved this drug for relief of heartburn associated with nonerosive gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), based primarily on an industry-sponsored randomized trial in which 772 patients with heartburn received vonoprazan or placebo for 4 weeks. All participants had heartburn for at least 6 months and no erosive esophagitis on upper endoscopy.
