Psilocybin, a naturally occurring psychedelic compound found in certain mushrooms, initially was proposed as an adjunct to enhance psychotherapy in the early 1960s, before psychedelic use was outlawed. Sixty years later, scientific interest and study on psilocybin's therapeutic potential has resurged, in combination with psychotherapy to help prepare for and process the psychedelic experience. The earliest studies involved people facing the stress of life-threatening cancer. These cancer studies were followed by studies in people with depression, substance abuse, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), or other anxiety disorders; researchers reported clear evidence of short-term, although not necessarily sustained, benefit.
