Both calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) and its receptor are highly expressed in coronary arteries. Antagonism of either CGRP or its receptor theoretically increases vascular risk. To examine this potential association, these researchers conducted a retrospective cohort study based on Medicare claims data for adult patients who initiated either CGRP monoclonal antibody (mAb) therapy (5153 patients) or onabotulinumtoxinA (OBA) therapy (4000 patients). Patients with myocardial infarction, stroke, cluster headache, or malignancy within the year before the study were excluded.
