Gaining an Important Tool Against Multidrug-Resistant Gram-Negative Bacteria

Aztreonam–avibactam is active against metallo-β-lactamase–producing Enterobacterales and Stenotrophomonas maltophilia.

The FDA has approved aztreonam–avibactam (ATM/AVI; Emblaveo) in combination with metronidazole (MET) for the treatment of complicated intra-abdominal infections (cIAI) in adults. REVISIT was a randomized multicenter trial evaluating ATM/AVI ± MET versus meropenem (MER) ± colistin (COL) in patients with cIAI or hospital-acquired bacterial pneumonia/ventilator-associated bacterial pneumonia (HABP/VABP). The primary endpoint was clinical cure at the test-of-cure visit in the intent-to-treat population. A total of 312 hospitalized patients with cIAI were randomized 2:1 to receive treatment with ATM/AVI with MET or MER ± COL for 5–14 days.
