Postanoxic status epilepticus (PSE) is common in cardiac arrest survivors, but its prognostic and treatment implications remain controversial. In this substudy of a larger trial, researchers investigated the performance of a two-step prognostication categorization of definite or possible PSE. First, patients were dichotomized based on the following hypothesized favorable characteristics: (1) Onset of PSE >24 hours after cardiac arrest; (2) return of continuous electroencephalograph (EEG) background prior to PSE onset; (3) absence of burst-suppression with identical or highly epileptiform bursts before PSE onset.
