Patients with frontotemporal dementia (FTD) can have behavioral symptoms such as apathy. To investigate whether intranasal oxytocin, an investigational (not FDA-approved) therapy, can improve apathy in patients with probable FTD, researchers conducted a phase 2, multicenter, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, adaptive crossover trial, in two stages. In stage 1, researchers determined the optimal dosing schedule by comparing every-day, every-other-day, or every-third-day administration of 72 IU of intranasal oxytocin or placebo twice a day for 6 weeks.
