Dengue, a mosquito-borne viral infection, is endemic to subtropical regions such as Puerto Rico, where infection rates are highest from July to November (after the rainy season). The dengue virus has four serotypes (DENV 1–4), and infection with one does not protect against subsequent infections with the others. Dengue can be relatively mild or severe enough to result in death. Repeated infection with different serotypes increases the morbidity and mortality of the disease, for which no specific treatments are available.
