Marginal ulcers after gastrojejunostomy can bleed or perforate and require revisional surgery — whether nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) contribute to their pathogenesis is uncertain. To clarify this association, researchers analyzed prescribing data and billing codes from 6800 patients (mean age at surgery, 46) with previous gastrojejunostomies (nearly all Roux-en-Y gastric bypass bariatric surgeries) who received care in the Cleveland Clinic system from 2004 to 2023.
During median follow-up of 8.2 years, 45% of patients were prescribed NSAIDs, with an average of four prescriptions or refills per patient. Key findings were as follows:
