Data from older studies suggest that 1 in 3 patients will experience a stroke within 5 years after a transient ischemic attack (TIA). Now, researchers have conducted a meta-analysis of more-contemporary studies to determine 5- and 10-year outcomes after a TIA or minor stroke.
The analysis included 38 studies, 71% of which enrolled patients in or after 2007, with a total of 171,068 patients (median age, 69 years; 57% men). The rate of subsequent stroke per 100 person-years was 5.94 events in the first year, 1.80 annually in years 2–5, and 1.72 annually in years 6–10.
