During the past decade, rates of GAS have more than doubled; hard-hit groups include people experiencing homelessness and people who inject drugs.
Invasive group A Streptococcus (GAS) infections such as necrotizing fasciitis and toxic shock syndrome have high morbidity and mortality. Now, CDC has reported the incidence and risk factors for invasive GAS infection based on surveillance in 10 U.S. states throughout the past decade.
From 2013 through 2022, incidence of invasive GAS more than doubled (from 3.6/100,000 to 8.2/100,000 people). Groups with strikingly high incidence included people experiencing homelessness (807/100,000 in 2022), people who inject drugs (97/100,000 in 2018), residents of long-term care facilities (75/100,000 in 2020), and American Indian or Alaska Native individuals (39/100,000 in 2022).
