Pregnancy is associated with elevated risk for venous thromboembolism (VTE), but the incidence of VTE recurrence is understood less well with pregnancy than with other provoking factors. French researchers addressed this question in a study of 583 patients who had a first VTE episode during pregnancy or in the 3 months after delivery.
During a median follow-up of 31 years, the cumulative incidence of VTE recurrence was 6% at 2 years, 13% at 5 years, 30% at 30 years, and 38% overall. First episode in an interrupted pregnancy (i.e., ectopic pregnancy or spontaneous or induced abortion), lower-limb deep venous thrombosis, and AB blood group were significant risk factors for recurrence.
