Baloxavir, FDA-approved for influenza treatment and postexposure prophylaxis, reduces shedding of influenza virus more rapidly than oseltamivir. Now, in a manufacturer-sponsored study, investigators evaluated whether treatment with baloxavir prevents transmission to household contacts.
Some 1460 index patients with influenza who were not at high risk for complications and 2700 household contacts were enrolled in 15 countries. Index patients were randomized to receive a single oral dose of baloxavir or placebo. The main findings are:
