Lower-leg injuries that require immobilization are associated with risk for venous thromboembolism (VTE), but reported incidence of VTE varies widely and probably reflects a wide spectrum of risk. Recommendations for preventive anticoagulation are variable: American guidelines advise against it, but universal prophylaxis is recommended by some European groups.
