A Clinical Score for Thrombosis Risk After Lower-Leg Injury

Two studies show that the TRiP(cast) tool can identify low-risk patients who don't require preventive anticoagulation.

Lower-leg injuries that require immobilization are associated with risk for venous thromboembolism (VTE), but reported incidence of VTE varies widely and probably reflects a wide spectrum of risk. Recommendations for preventive anticoagulation are variable: American guidelines advise against it, but universal prophylaxis is recommended by some European groups. In two recent studies, researchers evaluated Thrombosis Risk Prediction for Patients with Cast Immobilization (TRiP[cast]), a tool that incorporates 14 patient and injury characteristics to stratify patients into low- or high-risk categories.
