A high lipoprotein(a) [Lp(a)] level increases the risk for a first atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) event, but what about the risk for recurrent events? To address this question, researchers analyzed U.S. claims data from 274,000 patients with established ASCVD, examining risk for a recurrent ASCVD event stratified by Lp(a) level.
Lp(a) levels were higher in women compared with men and in Black patients compared with Hispanic and white patients. During a median follow-up of 5.4 years, patients with higher Lp(a) levels had incrementally higher risk for a recurrent ASCVD event (adjusted hazard ratio, 1.45 for those with Lp(a) >300 nmol/L vs. <15 nmol/L).
