About one third of severe asthma exacerbations occur in patients with “mild” asthma. Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA) guidelines thus recommend that all patients with asthma, regardless of severity, use the combination of an inhaled corticosteroid (ICS) plus β-agonist for as-needed “rescue” treatment. Albuterol/budesonide (AIRSUPRA) prevents some exacerbations in patients who use daily ICS for moderate or severe asthma; now, researchers examined its effects in patients with mild asthma. In a manufacturer-sponsored study, 2500 adults were randomized to as-needed 180-μg albuterol plus 160-μg budesonide in a single inhaler (i.e., 2 puffs of AIRSUPRA) or 180-μg albuterol alone for ≤52 weeks.
