When a patient has a hypersensitivity reaction to iodinated contrast media (ICM), it can be immediate (within 1 hour) or delayed. Immediate reactions can be mild (urticaria, itchy throat, rhinitis), moderate (severe urticaria, mild facial angioedema, throat tightness, and wheezing) or severe (angioedema or respiratory involvement with hypoxia, hypotension, or multiple organ system involvement).
