The 2024–2025 respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) season represents the first time when effective RSV prevention strategies for both mother and child — third-trimester vaccination for pregnant women and nirsevimab for their infants — were widely available in the U.S. Has this made a difference?
Patton et al. compared rates of pediatric RSV-associated hospitalization during the 2024–2025 RSV season with two pooled seasons spanning 2018–2020. They found that during the 2024–2025 season:
RSV-hospitalized children were older than in prior seasons (~14 months compared with ~6 months).
Fewer infants aged 0–7 months were hospitalized than in prior seasons (28%–43% rate reduction), with the greatest reduction in infants less than 2 months old.
