Life expectancy for people with Down syndrome has increased substantially in recent decades. We know that congenital heart disease is common in people with Down syndrome, but their risk for other types of cardiovascular disease as they enter middle age is unclear. To address this gap, Swedish researchers conducted a population-based study in which ≈5000 people with Down syndrome, born between 1946 and 2000, were compared with ≈250,000 controls matched by sex and birth year. Median age in the Down group at final follow-up was 35.
