Some patients with Guillain–Barré syndrome (GBS) continue to progress after treatment and are unable to walk 6 months after onset. In a previously reported trial (SID-GBS), patients with poor prognosis (modified Erasmus GBS Outcome score ≥6) randomized to receive a second course of intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIg) about 1 week after a standard course did not have better outcomes than those randomized to placebo and had more thromboembolic events. Whether treatment response correlates with pharmacokinetic response is unclear. In this study, researchers used SID-GBS data to investigate the pharmacokinetics of serum immunoglobulin G (IgG) in 44 patients who received a second IVIg treatment and 34 who received placebo.
