In June 2025, the U.S. FDA approved a new three-drug, single-pill combination (brand name, Widaplik1) for treating patients with hypertension. Its components are an angiotensin-receptor blocker (telmisartan), a calcium-channel blocker (amlodipine), and a thiazide-like diuretic (indapamide); the medication comes in three strengths for these 3 components:
Lowest dose: 10 mg/1.25 mg/0.625 mg
Intermediate dose: 20 mg/2.5 mg/1.25 mg
Highest dose: 40 mg/5 mg/2.5 mg
Many patients with hypertension require more than one drug for adequate control, and minimizing the number of pills might boost adherence to treatment. These observations, taken together, are the impetus for developing a 3-drug combination (NEJM JW Gen Med Nov 15 2024).
