Lifestyle modifications are thought to be critically important for patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) and are highlighted as such in the latest guidelines. Many retrospective and prospective AF registries have shown the benefits of weight loss, reduced caloric intake, increased physical activity, and decreased alcohol intake, but very few randomized trials have been conducted.
This trial included 203 patients with any type of AF (mean age, 60; mean BMI, 35; 32% female; 56% paroxysmal AF) who were randomized to catheter ablation or to the combination of lifestyle modification and antiarrhythmic drugs.
