Although endovascular thrombectomy (EVT) improves functional outcomes for patients with large-vessel occlusion (LVO) stroke, many still experience significant disability, as the infarct can expand even after successful reperfusion. RNS60, a preparation of supersaturated oxygen in saline, might have immune and neuroprotective effects as an adjunctive therapy, based on limited data from animal models. In a randomized, phase 2, safety and tolerability trial that was sponsored, funded, and led by the manufacturer, 82 patients with LVO stroke began a 48-hour infusion of high-dose RNS60, low-dose RNS60, or placebo during the EVT procedure.
