Soil-transmitted worm (helminth) infections are common in children living in tropical and subtropical low- and middle-income regions. Standard treatment with a single benzimidazole is generally effective against several common helminth infections but not trichuriasis (whipworm), which is hard to cure. Although combination therapy including moxidectin is effective against trichuriasis in adolescents and adults, it has not been evaluated in children. (Moxidectin is FDA approved for treating onchocerciasis, with a recent expansion to include children 4 years and older weighing at least 13 kg.)
