In 2023, the American Heart Association (AHA) introduced a new cardiovascular risk calculator called PREVENT (NEJM JW Gen Med Jul 15 2024 and Circulation 2024; 149:430). This tool outperforms the pooled cohort equation (PCE) — the equation responsible for 10-year risk estimates in the widely used 2013 AHA calculator — across various populations. However, its accuracy in older adults is uncertain because it was developed using data from people younger than 80. In this study, researchers compared the performance of PREVENT and PCE among roughly 18,000 people who had enrolled in a clinical trial of aspirin at age ≥65 (median age, 74; 15% were ≥80) and were followed for a median of 8 years.
