Aerobic exercise hasn't been studied much for improving hip function in patients with hip osteoarthritis (OA). Preliminary results from a study of stationary cycling in patients with OA were promising, so U.K. investigators conducted a randomized trial in 221 adults (mean age, 64) with OA to compare stationary cycling with traditional physical therapy (PT). Participants had clinical criteria for hip OA: pain and stiffness, and x-ray confirmation for younger patients (age, 18–45). Participants assigned to the PT group received one-on-one traditional PT for as many as four sessions during 8 weeks (mean attendance, 2 sessions) with interval telephone reinforcement.
