Early Surgery for Asymptomatic Severe Degenerative Mitral Regurgitation

Early surgery was associated with better outcomes in this long-term analysis.

Current guidelines for severe degenerative asymptomatic mitral regurgitation (MR) with preserved left ventricular function recommend watchful waiting (European Society of Cardiology) or early surgery if the likelihood of successful repair is >95% (American Heart Association/American College of Cardiology [AHA/ACC]). In this multicenter Korean study, investigators followed ≈1000 patients (mean age, 51 years, 37% women) with severe MR (effective regurgitant orifice area, >0.4 cm²).
