In most cases showing neutrophilic infiltrates in the region of partially destroyed hair follicle epithelium, a diagnosis of bacterial or fungal folliculitis can be made with some degree of certainty. However, these investigators report the cases of 20 patients in whom the clinical impression was not folliculitis, despite the histologic findings. Nineteen of the patients suffered from systemic processes, including inflammatory bowel disease, Reiter's disease, Behçet's disease, hepatitis B, hematologic disease, and connective tissue diseases. All patients had accompanying fever, malaise, or arthralgias.
