Gastroparesis is characterized by nausea, vomiting, early satiety, and other symptoms associated with delayed gastric emptying. Diagnosing and treating this condition can be challenging as symptoms overlap with other gastrointestinal disorders, and we have few well-established remedies. To guide clinicians, the AGA has issued updated recommendations for managing gastroparesis.
In evaluating a patient with suspected gastroparesis, rule out mechanical obstruction with endoscopy, then order a 4-hour gastric emptying study. Avoid 2-hour studies, which are less accurate.
