In women who undergo transvaginal ultrasound (TVUS) imaging of adnexal masses, benign ovarian and other adnexal cysts are commonly detected, leading to follow-up sonographic evaluation and, often, patient anxiety. The Society of Radiologists in Ultrasound recently convened a panel of gynecologists, radiologists, and pathologists to develop a consensus statement encompassing characteristic imaging findings for various adnexal cysts as well as follow-up recommendations. Highlights of the statement are as follows:
Simple cysts (reproductive age)
Follicles ≤3 cm in diameter are considered normal.
Cysts ≤5 cm: follow-up not required.
Cysts >5 to ≤7 cm: annual follow-up recommended.
