The continuing controversy about health benefits of low-carbohydrate and low-fat diets has shifted to focus on the nature of the specific foods within those two categories. In this prospective cohort study, researchers linked a U.S. survey of health and nutrition behavior to a national mortality database to identify more than 37,000 adults (mean age, 50) who completed at least one 24-hour dietary recall between 1999 and 2014. During a mean follow-up of 8 years, ≈4800 deaths occurred. Dietary recall data were analyzed with detailed assessments of the sources of carbohydrate and fat calories.
