Cholestyramine, a bile acid sequestrant, is a proven means of lowering elevated cholesterol levels, but its value is limited somewhat by problems of palatability, portability, and caloric content. A recent reformulation of cholestyramine -- Questran Light -- was designed to improve patient acceptance. This study evaluates its efficacy.
Sixty-one men with hypercholesterolemia (plasma cholesterol greater than 265 mg/dl) were entered into this randomized trial. After three weeks of baseline therapy with regular Questran, 31 of the men were randomly assigned to receive the new low-calorie, sugar-free formulation. The other 30 men continued receiving regular Questran. Both groups were treated for four weeks.
