Results of several studies have demonstrated that the differential diagnoses of chronic cough in nonsmoking individuals who are not on angiotensin-converting-enzyme inhibitor therapy most often include asthma, postnasal drip, or gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). A correct diagnosis is key to the initiation of successful therapy. This prospective, placebo-controlled, randomized, double-blind study was conducted to evaluate whether a high dose of the proton-pump inhibitor, omeprazole, is effective for treating GERD-induced cough.
