A major advance in the treatment of acute diarrhea has been the use of oral rehydration therapy, and the World Health Organization (WHO) electrolyte solution has achieved prominence in this area. Other recent advances for abating diarrhea include oral rice flour solutions (RFS) and gastric infusion of rehydration solutions. This clinical trial compares these various approaches.
After initial oral rehydration, researchers randomized 66 Mexican infants with dehydration caused by high-output diarrhea (greater than 10 ml/kg/hr for two consecutive hours) to one of three groups: oral RFS (no electrolytes added); oral WHO solution; or WHO solution given by gastric infusion.
