Oropouche fever, an arboviral infection transmitted mostly by midges, has been spreading in Latin America and the Caribbean and is a concern for clinicians caring for travelers. However, relatively few systematic descriptions from these newly affected areas exist. Now, using standardized surveillance data, investigators report on nearly 500 patients with PCR-confirmed Oropouche fever in Iquitos, located in the jungle region of Peru, in the first 9 months of 2024.
The mean age of the cohort was 28 years, and 38% were children.
Headache, fever, myalgia, and arthralgias were the most prevalent symptoms.
Severe organ involvement was rare, and only 10 patients required hospitalization.
