Causal evidence demonstrates human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination significantly reduces cervical cancer risk, and additional observational evidence supports protection of other HPV-related sites, such as genitourinary and oropharyngeal systems. To further investigate associations with noncervical cancers, researchers used a U.S. electronic health records database to retrospectively match 350,000 HPV-vaccinated females to controls who weren’t vaccinated against HPV.
In the 5-year follow-up, the HPV-vaccination group had significantly fewer cancers than the control group overall (399 vs. 1090, respectively).
